Hi, I’m Anjali, and I believe in self-care before anything else. I also believe in constant forward progress and growth.
For me, self-care has meant fitness, my whole life. Ever since I can remember, I’ve been obsessed with moving my body.
I took a few dance classes as a kid, I regularly trained for and ran races during college and beyond, and I’ve been challenging myself with new fitness opportunities every day since.
Though I studied and practice law now, my fitness obsession led to me to obtain my Personal Training Certification from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.
This workout journey of mine also took me through some pretty heavy duty things: an MMA gym (where I definitely was too chicken for combat!), Crossfit, Shaun T’s Insanity (yes, I did the whole thing, and yes, I wanted to die the whole time, but I absolutely love and am obsessed with Shaun :-)), Autumn Calabrese’s 80 Day Obsession (I’m equally as obsessed with Autumn!).
The one place I never expected this journey to take me?
Contortion, handbalancing, yoga and bodyweight fitness.
For a long time, I thought a gym and heavy weights were needed to get fit.
And the thing is, that makes no sense because I’m Indian, and I was raised yoga.
You see, my dad, a physician, has done yoga every morning at 4:30 AM for as long as I could possibly remember. As a child, I remember coming down the stairs to watch him and then joining in occasionally. As an adult, I remember visiting home from college and law school and never seeing him skip a morning.
Yogic philosophy was infused throughout my Hindu childhood. I understood the Bhagavad Gita and the idea of yogic “unity” far before I perfected my pincha mayurasana.
The thing is, whenever I’d tried yoga in the past, it always tasted a little stale to me.
There were zen-ed out hippies (that I didn’t think really understood what actual yoga, not just physical asana practice, is) around me telling me to “tap into my inner peace” and “find my flow,” some people in the class were so flexible I wondered if they had any bones in their body, and my body left feeling like it hadn’t done any real work (well, “real work” for me, which at the time, meant destroying my body beyond all recognition).
I was sick of the cultural appropriation of my culture. And I also felt like yoga didn’t do enough for my body.
But I was wrong.
It was me that wasn’t doing enough for my body in yoga.
Ultimately, my fitness and spiritual journey still led me back to yoga. A lot of that was due to my dad. His constant refrain of telling me to “Live In The Moment Only” or LITMO, finally suck in. And one of the best ways to LITMO? Yoga to train the mind to stay in those moments.
When I started practicing again, I felt something different.
I felt this new found strength, power, and clarity that no fitness exercise had ever given me before.
I experienced a real, raw connection to my body in a way that marathons and deadlifts never allowed.
Better than either of those, I feel like I was doing something wonderful for my body, instead of constantly putting it through the ringer.
A big part of this change was learning how to master yoga’s multi-layer nature. That led me to more extreme forms of bodyweight fitness and mastery, like contortion and handbalancing.
I studied for and obtained my RYT-500, and registered as a teacher with the Yoga Alliance. I also became certified in Restorative Yoga, Chair Yoga, Restorative Yoga, Yin Yoga & Aerial Yoga.
The discipline, self-awareness, self-appreciation and mastery I’ve gained from bodyweight fitness and arts like contortion has been life-changing.
If you’re anything like me, you love pushing your body to new heights and you want to feel and look your best.
